Arthur "Hal" Hoverland Obituary
ARTHUR "HAL" HOVERLAND Hal passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012. He was born in Boston, MA on May 13, 1928, the son of Arthur and Bertha Hoverland. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Hal attended college and received his BS in accounting from Miami University, his Master from University of Illinois, and PhD from University of Michigan. He worked at Proctor & Gamble before a long and distinguished career as a professor at San Jose State University, Naval Post Graduate School, University of Aix En Provence (Provence, France), and Cal State University, San Bernardino. At CSUSB he was the founding Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration and served in that capacity through 1986 when he returned to the faculty until his retirement in 1992. Hal loved life and enjoyed hiking, traveling, working crossword puzzles, reading, and attending the symphony and live theater. He remained an active member of the university community and was active on the Robert V. Fullerton Museum Board at CSUSB. He is survived by daughter Erica Hoverland; his wife, Marjorie Hoverland; and her children: Kim Gavin and her husband Kevin, Craig Scott and his companion Marc Chacon, Sheri Scott and three grandchildren: Jameson and Jessica Gavin and Nathaniel Scott-Negrette. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 3PM 6PM at Cal State San Bernardino in the Obershaw Dining Room. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the scholarship he established in 1993 at CSUSB for students who excel in the classroom and community service.
