DR. AUSTIN MASON, 90 July 28, 1923 - December 7, 2013 Austin Mason passed away at Bloomington Hospital on Saturday, December 7, 2013. He was born in San Diego, California to Chester and Rosalie Mason. Austin served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II in combat and as a bandleader. He graduated from San Diego State University 1948 with a Bachelor's Degree in music and was married to Naomi Turpie on June 15, 1947. Austin was a high school teacher, band director, and assistant principal at Mountain Empire High School in San Diego County, California. He relocated to Northern California in 1953 where he earned his Masters' Degree in Education at Stanford University during which time he taught elementary school in Los Altos. The family moved to Corona, California in 1956 where he served as principal of Jefferson Elementary School until 1961. Austin earned a Doctorate in Educational Administration from UCLA in 1963 and was appointed Assistant Superintendent of the Corona-Norco Unified School District. As an advocate for children with developmental disabilities he was instrumental in the establishment of Victress Bower School in Norco, CA. He also served on the Board of Directors of Peppermint Ridge, a residential home for those with developmental disabilities. Austin retired in 1980 and moved to San Juan Capistrano, California where he pursued a second career as a piano technician and sailed the waters of the Pacific. In 2006 Austin and Naomi moved to Bloomington, Indiana. During his life, "Auzzie" was an accomplished musician sharing his artistry on the piano with family and friends on many occasions. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is fondly remembered by the many students who attended Jefferson School who carry on the integrity and values that he lived and worked by. He is survived by his wife of 66 years and the love of his life, Naomi Mason of Bloomington, Indiana; his son, Terry Mason, and daughter-in-law, Ginette Delandshere, also of Bloomington; his daughters Deborah Mason of Santa Rosa, California, and Susan Mason Dana of Corona, California, and his six grandchildren, Benjamin Mason and his wife Renee, John "Jake" Prichard, Allison Dana, Annie Prichard, Julien Mason, and Jeff Dana. He was preceded in death by his brother, Alvin Mason. Per his wishes, there will be no service. Donations in his memory can be made to Peppermint Ridge.
