Barbara A. Mullins Obituary
Wife, Mother and Companion
"Going through life with Barbara has been a very joyous thing" is the way her husband of 67 years describes their life together. Barbara, the wife of retired United States Air Force General James P. Mullins and mother of Kathryn, Karin, Lynn, Jay, and Jack and grandmother of Laura, Tyson, Adam, Jessica,Sean, Kathleen, James, Patrick, Matthew, Ryan, and Luke died on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the age of 92.
Barbara was one of those individuals of whom it can be said everyone loved. She lived for her family and friends of whom she had many throughout this country and in foreign lands. Born in the small town of Fremont, Ohio, the only child of Virgil and Eva (Seward) Hilty, she grew up during the Great Depression and graduated from Ross High School in June 1942, just after the outbreak of World War II. She was secretary to the manager of the Ohio Fuel & Gas Company in Fremont until the fall of 1948 when she relocated to Tucson, Arizona where Barbara had relatives. She found employment as secretary to the President of real estate operations for the Canyon State Land and Title Company and it was in Tucson, a year later, that she met her future husband who had just reported for duty at the nearby Air Force base after graduating from pilot training and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After almost a yearlong courtship Barbara and Jim were married at the base chapel in August 1950, beginning her years as an Air Force wife, a role for which she was uniquely well suited. In the years that followed, during which her husband rose steadily through the ranks in a wide variety of staff and command positions, culminating in his promotion to four star rank and command of the Air Force Logistics Command, Barbara not only managed but thrived in the dual role of wife and mother of five children and as her husband's partner in service to the Air Force, its mission and people.
With assignment changes that averaged one every two and a half years and numerous in-place moves necessitating the relocation of her family, together with frequent and sometimes extended duty-driven absences of her husband, Barbara nevertheless maintained a stable home environment for her family. At the same time she met her many obligations as an Air Force wife, first as the wife of a junior officer, then later as that of a staff officer and commander, supporting the families of other officers and enlisted personnel wherever needed, a role in which Barbara also excelled. She was comfortable with everyone with whom she met and they with her. It can be said of her that she left her mark on everyone with whom she came in contact and the world a better place for her having been here.
