BARBARA DOWNS HETHERINGTON
Barbara Downs Hetherington was born March 16, 1933 to Elvin and Jean Downs in Covina, CA. After moving to Corona, Barbara graduated from Corona High School in 1950. She then attended Stanford University where she graduated with a Masters Degree in Physical Education and met and married Tom Hetherington. They returned to Corona after living in the Bay Area and Barbara taught PE at Letha Raney Jr. High. At Raney she was also the Supervisor of GRA, she was the girls' basketball coach and the track and field coach for many years. During this time she was also a very active Girl Scout leader who led her troop on many exciting camping and backpacking trips. From Letha Raney, Barbara moved on to Norco High School where she finished her career in education as a guidance counselor.
After Tom's death, Barbara traveled and saw the world with many friends and family. Her all time favorite place to be was spending time at her summer home in Granite Creek, Wyoming. She was an active member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Corona where she organized lunch dates for the monthly gathering of the Sociable Seniors, and was a member of Daughters of the King.
The last year of Barbara's life was spent living near her two daughters in Porterville, CA. She passed away November 9, 2017. Barbara is survived by her brother John Downs (Catherine) of Corona; her three children, Thomas Hetherington of Riverside, Susan (Kevin) Qualseth of Porterville, and Janet Keane also of Porterville; grandsons Jesse (Ashly) Qualseth and Cody Qualseth and her great grandson, Colton Qualseth, who was her greatest joy.
