Barbara Kothlow Obituary
BARBARA KOTHLOW A longtime resident of Riverside, passed away Friday December 7th at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, CA while visiting her beloved family beach home. The daughter of Jim and Angela Curtis, she was born on June 15, 1929 in Chicago, Ill. Barbara grew up with her brothers Jim and Jack in the Chicago area and spent summers with family and friends at their lake house at Paw Paw Lake in Watervliet, Michigan. This is where she learned to love ice skating and water skiing. She water skied even at the age of 70 and ice skated until just a couple of years ago. Barbara attended St. Mary of the Woods College and Trinity College where she studied Home Economics and Nutrition. She met her husband, Richard after being introduced to him by her brother Jim during a weekend trip home in 1950 and they were married in March of 1951. They started a family soon after and moved from Michigan to California in 1961 where she enjoyed life as a full time mom and raised a family of six children. Upon the death of her husband in 1977, she decided to start the Pre School program at St. Francis school in Riverside. For over 15 years she worked tirelessly with young children preparing them for school. She retired from teaching and worked part time in the family business as an office administrator until her full retirement in 1997. Barbara was also extremely involved in her Catholic faith as a member of St. Francis parish. She diligently served her church by participating in the Altar and Rosary Society, she was a Eucharistic Minister, and always did the flower decorating for Christmas and Easter. She was also involved in the community as a member of the Junior League and Para Niños. Barbara enjoyed making crafts, sewing, floral arranging, and cooking for her family and friends and continuing the family traditions she grew up with. Another great joy in her life was traveling the world with her husband, family, and friends. However, Barbara held a special place in her heart for the warm sunshine on the coast of Laguna Beach, where she spent many summers with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Barbara is survived by her six children, Richard Jr. Mary, Kathy, John, Kevin and Steve, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all of whom live in southern California and brought great joy to her life. Viewing will be held on Thursday, December 13th at 5 pm with the Rosary immediately following 6:30pm at Acheson and Graham Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Friday., December 14, at St. Francis de Sales Church, 4268 Lime St., Riverside, CA at 10:30 am with the burial immediately following at Olivewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Francis de Sales School, 4205 Mulberry St., Riverside, CA.
