Berkley B. Kaufhold

1936 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
BERKLEY B. KAUFHOLD
Berkley B. Kaufhold, age 81, passed away on January 3, 2018. Berkley was born in Amarillo, Texas and resided in Riverside, California for over 50 years, where he was an educator and a volunteer for a number of causes dedicated to improving the lives of others in the community.
Berkley grew up in Amarillo with parents Alvin and Myrtle Kaufhold and his brothers Ross and Marion. He graduated from Amarillo High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from West Texas State in Canyon, Texas and his Masters degree from North Texas State in Denton, Texas.
Prior to moving to California, Berkley served in the United States Army in Korea and around the United States, including as a public information officer, made a number of friends, and began what would be a lifetime interest in advancing and serving the interests of military veterans and their families. This commitment would last the rest of his life.
First in Texas, and then in California, Berkley spent his entire adult life as a teacher, mentor and coach to literally thousands of students, including over 40 years teaching at Norte Vista High School in Riverside and decades teaching evening courses at Riverside Community College. His academic interests included preparing and teaching courses in English, journalism, and speech, among others. After retiring from day-to-day classroom teaching at Notre Vista, Berkley spent another 11 years educating and mentoring new teachers in association with California State University, San Bernardino. One of his many gifts was the ability to see and bring out the best in his students and to help them develop abilities and talents they didn't even know they had.
When his children were in elementary school, Berkley volunteered in a number of ways, including organizing the school's sports programs, which served hundreds of children, and being one of the first fathers to serve as President of the Parent Teacher Association.
In the mid-1970s, Berkley teamed with a small group of local business leaders and educators to found the Riverside Youth Scholarship Organization ("Helping Others"), which has distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school students based on the students' volunteer work in the community. As the last surviving founder, Berkley led the organization with dedication and a laser-like focus on helping Riverside County students afford college.
Berkley is survived by the love of his life, and wife of over 50 years, Paula Kaufhold, his children Steven (Christine), Ivy (John) and Hans (Moira), his beloved grandchildren Samantha, Sean, Aaron, Rachael, Sawyer and Christopher, his sister-in-law Susan Page Logger (John) and nephews Don, Charles, Lowell and Gary.
Berkley was predeceased by his parents Alvin and Myrtle, his brothers Ross and Marion, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Paul and Dolores Page and his sister-in-law Mary Jean Kaufhold. He loved them all.
A memorial service will be held for Berkley at First United Methodist Church of Riverside on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at the Riverside National Cemetery Staging Area Two at 12:15 p.m. A celebration of his life will follow immediately at the Riverside Elks Lodge. Family and friends are invited to attend. Berkley participated and supported organizations too numerous to mention and his family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, friends consider making a contribution to a charity focused on helping children or veterans in his memory.
