Bernard "Ben" Naginis Jr. Obituary
BERNARD "BEN" NAGINIS JR. 11/25/1926 - 9/21/2015 Ben was born in Norfolk, VA to parents Bernard & Ursula Naginis of Lithuania. He died in Oceanside, CA. He was a Riverside Merchant Tailor 1957 - 1992; Queen of Angels Parishioner 1964 - 2015. Earliest Memories: Point Marion, WV; Formative Years: Dayton, OH; Merchant Marines: 1944 - 1946 Pacific Theatre; U.S. Army: 1950 - 1952 4th Division, Germany. Ben was a Lens Crafter, Apple Picker, Lumberjack, Cowboy, Mink Rancher, Roofer and more before marrying Mary Patricia "Pat" Murphy on October 12, 1957 in Glendale, CA. They had four children, all born in Riverside: Bernard Joseph, John Anthony, Mary Theresa and Paul William. Pat and Ben enjoyed road trips for camping adventures and visiting family. They also traveled internationally; in 1983 they went to Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands for the baptism of their granddaughter Valerie and in 1995 they traveled to England and Ireland to explore Pat's Irish roots. In 1993 they joined Pat's brother James H. Murphy and her sister and brother-in-law, Terry and Bud Erickson, to attend a Murphy family reunion at Cape Cod, MA. Their road trips were taken in a station wagon, sedan, van and camper. In 1996 they bought a 24-foot motor home. Among their favorite destinations were Vancouver in British Columbia, Boys Town in Nebraska, Lambeau Field in Wisconsin, the Sacramento River Delta and especially Terry and Bud's place in Eagle Creek, OR. Besides gardening, prospecting for gold was one of Ben's favorite outdoor hobbies. These prospecting adventures took them to various locations in the CA deserts, up to Big Bear and even to the Kern and Klamath rivers! Ben was active in church and participated with his children in little league baseball and scouting. With his boundless energy he would have us children work with him all day at the tailor shop, come home to work in the yard and then call out at the end of the day, "Let's go for a bike ride!". He taught us to work hard and a proper manner of valuing money. Pat died on September 25, 2002. Ben is survived by five sisters: Helen Noreikas, Annie Barkauskas, Lilly Brown, Virgie Morrow and Agnes Winters as well as nine grandchildren: Sean Steinhoff, Valerie Naginis, Gigi (and Ted) Sharp, John Joseph Naginis, Andrew Soncrant, Jessica Steinhoff, Patrick Naginis, Jimmy Steinhoff and Michael Naginis. Viewing will be at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside, CA on Monday, 10/5/15 from 4 pm until 8 pm. Rosaries will be prayed at 4 pm and 6 pm. Ben's Funeral Mass will be at Queen of Angels Catholic Church on Tuesday morning, 10/6/15 at 10:30 am and burial will be at Riverside National Cemetery at 1 pm with a reception following at Acheson & Graham. Flowers: Patriotic Theme. Charity: Catholic Relief Services.
