BERNITA L STEVENS 1915 - 2013 Bernita passed into the loving arms of God on February 22, 2013, just one month shy of her 98th birthday. Bernita was born in Ottumwa, IA to Art and Esther Anderson. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1933 and from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL in 1937. She taught Business Education for several years in DeKalb, IL. She would go on to substitute in Riverside, CA high schools for many years. While at college Bernita fell in love with one of her sororiety sister's brothers. And, on June 7, 1942 she married John H. Stevens. They moved to Riverside, CA where he worked at March Field during WW2. Bernita and John had one son, Larry, born in 1944. Bernita especially enjoyed flowers and traveling. John made sure that there were flowers in the house year round. After retirement, they traveled to Hawaii and throughout Europe. John passed away in 1993. They were happily married for 51 years. A lifelong Lutheran, Bernita joined Eden Lutheran Church in 1942. She was active in Sunday school, Mezpah, Alter Guild and the Eden Church Women. Even after moving to Boise, ID Bernita considered Eden her church. After 63 wonderful years in Riverside, Bernita moved to Boise, ID to be near her son and his family. She really enjoyed living in an area that had all four seasons. Wintertime snow in Boise would bring out fond memories of winters growing up in Iowa. She lived at the Hillcrest Retirement and Assisted Care facility where she met a new group of friends. The family wants to thank the staff at Hillcrest for all their help and compassion in caring for mom during the last few months. Horizon Home Health and Hospice was also there to keep her comfortable. Bernita is survived by her son, Larry and daughter-in-law Gail; grandchildren Chad (Tara) and Sandy (Brian), and one great-granddaughter, Ellie. She is also survived by sorority sister and sister-in-law, Lucile McHard. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Eden Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or a . A private memorial service will be held in Riverside, CA at a later date.
