Bertha Barajas Obituary
BERTHA BARAJAS 6/22/1960 - 7/27/2016 Bertha Barajas passed peacefully at home on July 27, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bertha was born in Hollister, California but spent most of her childhood in Calexico, California. She graduated from Calexico High School and San Diego State University. After receiving her Bachelor's degree, she began her career in education at Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy and Meadows Union Elementary School. In 1994 she married Thomas Broersma and moved to Corona, California where she began teaching at Garretson Elementary School. After many years in the classroom, she became a teacher on Special Assignment with the Dual Language Immersion Program, developing curriculum and training other teachers in the field. This became her true passion and she was a major advocate for this program. She started the Bertha Barajas Scholarship for high school seniors who completed the K-12 program. Bertha had an eye for detail and adding a personal touch. She enjoyed handcrafting gifts, quilting, hosting themed dinner parties, Bingo and Chinaso. She loved to travel and did so extensively with friends and family, from Mexico to Istanbul, leaving decades of photos and memories for all. In addition to Thomas she is survived by her daughter Erika; stepchildren Christopher and Jenniffer; grandchildren Jacob and Karissa; siblings, nieces, nephews, loving in-laws and many friends. Services will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Corona on Monday, August 8th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to The Bertha Barajas Scholarship.
