Betty Jane (Helsel) Plattner Obituary
BETTY JANE (HELSEL) PLATTNER Age 89, passed away on Jan. 11, 2015, after a long illness. Betty was born on Nov. 6, 1925, in Biwabik, MN. She graduated in 1943 from Biwabik High School, where she was the baton-twirling majorette of the marching band. Betty met the love of her life, Ed Plattner, on a blind date at Bingo's Candy Store in Biwabik. They married on March 9, 1944. While Ed served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, Betty remained behind and worked as a sales associate for a Duluth department store, cultivating her lifelong fashion sense. In 1958, Betty and Ed moved to Riverside, CA, where they raised their four children. She worked as a senior accounting technician for the Riverside County Office of Education. Later in life, Betty returned to school and obtained an Associate in Arts degree (with distinction) from Riverside City College in 1984. In retirement, Betty operated the Riverside Tour Club, leading groups of seniors on extended bus tours to locations such as Santa Fe, NM; Hearst Castle, CA; and Las Vegas and Laughlin, NV. Betty and Ed moved to Plymouth Tower Care and Living Center (now The Grove) in 2005, where Betty served on the Residents Board. She enjoyed oil painting, genealogy, and watching Westerns on TV. Betty was known for her affinity for Sees chocolates and all things colored purple. Betty is survived by her two daughters, Sharon, of Riverside, and Cynthia, of Ukiah; and her two sons, Mike (and wife Christine) and Bradley (and wife Sandy), both of Riverside. She also leaves behind five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Edward; and her great grandson, David. All are invited to the memorial service on Monday, January 26 at 2 P.M. at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA. Plan to arrive by 1:45 P.M. and inquire at the gate for the Staging Area number.
