Betty Jean Swoffer Obituary
BETTY JEAN SWOFFER Longtime Riverside resident, Betty Jean Swoffer, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 15, 2015. Born in Anaheim, California to Letty and Ernest Zimmer, she was predeceased by her identical twin sister, Letty Jo Pope, in 2007. Betty and her beloved late husband, Gordon Newell Swoffer, Jr., a prominent businessman and Executive Vice President of the family business, Brookhurst Mill, moved to Riverside from Anaheim in 1959. During her 56 years in Riverside, Betty was active in Para Ni¤os Auxiliary, National Charity League, Bible Study Fellowship, Riverside Community Hospital Foundation-Founder's Club and Assistance League of Riverside, where she served as President in 1969-70. She was a member of Anaheim Presbyterian Church, and later Magnolia Presbyterian Church in Riverside, a past member of the Riverside Community College District Foundation Board and a longtime member of the Victoria Club. As a devoted philanthropist who embraced volunteer work, Betty always championed the rights of women and those who were in need. She and Gordon were exceptionally family and community-minded, consistently putting the needs of others ahead of their own. They enjoyed traveling around the world, but Betty was most content at home. A voracious reader, Betty always kept up with what was going on in the world. She was loving, gracious, generous and genteel. A "practical perfectionist," she believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. Betty invested the full capacity of her mind and heart in those she loved. She was not a person given to qualified commitments to her friends or family, and so the family's sense of loss is total; she was a woman neither easily forgotten nor found again. She will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Sue Ward (husband Dana) of Manhattan Beach and Kay Follett (husband George) of Long Beach; her two granddaughters, Allison Maguire (husband Casey) and Lauren Follett (fianc‚ Nathan); her sister-in-law, Elva Swoffer, and her five great-grandchildren, whom she adored. She is also survived by beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is grateful for the loyal support of Betty's caregivers, whose love and companionship she greatly valued. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary Chapel, followed by interment at Olivewood Cemetery. Friends may also call from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Mortuary. Memorial donations may be made to Assistance League of Riverside "Expansion Fund", 3707 Sunnyside Drive, Riverside, California 92506 (951-682-3445), or to the "Betty J. and Gordon N. Swoffer, Jr., Endowed Scholarship" at Riverside City College (Contact the RCCD Foundation at 951-222-8626).
