BETTY J. MARTIN
Age 93, Union Star, Missouri, was called home to the Lord on Friday, October 13, 2017. She passed peace- fully at her daughter's home.
Betty was born in Willow Lake, South Dakota to the late Ernest and Mae Houghton-Thorne on December 1, 1923. She grew up in Pierpont, SD and went to college to become a school teacher. She married Dale D. Hawkinson in 1945. They were married for 32 years, settled in Riverside, California, had 5 children and enjoyed an active social life. Dale passed away in 1977. Betty then married L. Bert Martin, who added 3 sons to Betty's family. In 1997 they settled in Union Star, Missouri where Betty's daughter lived. L. Bert passed away in 1999. Betty was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, attended the First Baptist Church in Union Star and was dedicated to the Lord.
Betty was preceded in death by both her husbands, Dale and L. Bert; parents; brothers Virgil and Oscar Thorne; Sister Lila Rodman. Survivors include daughters, Lila Jackson (Jim), Nancy Hawkinson, Gail Newberry- O'Donnell (Bob), all of Union Star, MO, Laura Chandler (Chuck) of Colorado Springs, CO; sons, Dale K. Hawkinson of Riverside, CA, Jim Martin (Doreen), Mike Martin, all of Olivehill, KY, Larry Martin (Connie) of Hurricane, UT; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Farewell Services 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 22nd at the Union Star Baptist Church. Inurnment at Fort Logan Cemetery, Denver, CO at a later date. Online guest book and obituary at www.meierhoffer.com
