Bruce D. Smith Obituary
BRUCE D. SMITH Bruce D. Smith passed away on November 13, 2016. He is survived by his wife Sylvia Smith; three sons: Michael, Lance, and Kurt; six grandchildren, and sister D. Barbara Smith. Born on a farm in eastern Oregon during the Great Depression, he met Sylvia in college at Oregon State University in the 1950s, where they married a few years after his graduation. Bruce's first career was as a pilot in the Air Force for 20 years, traveling all over the country and the world, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. During his career he flew C-123, and C-130 cargo planes. He served in the Vietnam War. His numerous personal decorations and awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, and Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters. Perhaps one of his most interesting assignments was that of Military History Professor at West Point USMA. He later transitioned to a second career as a flight instructor, charter pilot, and later as chief pilot at Riverside Air Service for another 10 years. He loved aircraft and flying, and at different times had vintage Ryan and Cessna aircraft of his own. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. His remains will be inurned in Riverside National Cemetery in a private ceremony.
