BYRON J. LIGHTFELDT

Age 81, of Marion, Illinois, beloved husband and father, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Byron was born on January 12, 1936, in Riverside, California, to William and Margaret Lightfeldt. He graduated in 1953 from Poly Tech High School in Riverside, and he was a resident of Riverside County for 70 years.
From 1954-1958, he proudly served in the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic, working on F-86 Sabre aircraft at Chanute AFB, Illinois. For many years, Byron and his brother, Donald, operated Lightfeldt Construction Company throughout southern California. After earning his BA degree, Byron worked for the County of Riverside for 25 years, retiring in 1993 as Director of Buildings and Grounds. He remained an active member of various communities in Riverside County until his move to Illinois in 2007.
Byron enjoyed spending time with his family camping and traveling. He also enjoyed woodworking, oil painting, and rock collecting and sculpting. Byron had a strong passion for gardening and always had beautiful flower gardens wherever he lived. He had a deep love for his beautiful dogs, Babe and Sadie.
Byron is survived by his wife of 31 years, Shylana Lightfeldt; his four children, Deborah Houghtaling, Linda Martinez, John Lightfeldt, and Alan Lightfeldt; his step-daughter Brenda Dally; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and his two sisters, Patricia Heitsman and Marion Ratagick. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Byron's family will honor his life with a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on July 12, 2017, at Arlington Mortuary in Riverside, followed by a graveside service with full military honors at 12:45 pm at Riverside National Cemetery.
