Carol Elaine Gauntz

1937 - 2017 Obituary Condolences

June 12, 1937 - June 26, 2017
Carol was born in Loma Linda, CA to Roscoe and Beatrice (Elmlund) Schott. She grew up with two sisters, Barbara and Virginia, in the Riverside area. It was while attending Poly High that she met Mel Gauntz. The high school sweethearts married in 1956 - They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last September (Mel passed away last July). Their 'couple song' was the Platters' Only You - which was perfect for them.
In 1958, they wandered across Europe, hitch-hiking and staying in youth hostels, collecting wonderful memories and amazing stories. Carol later became a travel agent, allowing them to continue their travel adventures. She worked at Gambie's Travel in Santa Clara/Sunnyvale and Travel Advisors of Los Gatos for 30 years.
Both avid golfers, Carol and Mel golfed at many courses locally and abroad, encountering turtles on a South Carolina course, alligators in Florida and kangaroos in Australia! Carol and Mel also enjoyed sharing books, movies and music (She liked Dick Francis and Rex Stout, Ed Harris and Clint Eastwood, Neil Diamond and Lou Rawls). They did the Sunday crossword together and played Scrabble and Yahtzee daily after retirement. Although Mel always fancied himself a brilliant scholar and strategist, a friend reminded me that is was CAROL who was "the marvel" - She was the undoubted champ at poker, scrabble, bridge, monopoly or whatever other game it was.
Carol and daughter Rachel went on many trips together as well; shopping, sight-seeing, dining and drinking their way around Hawaii, Mexico, England and New Orleans. They spent many weekends scouring flea markets and antique shops for 'treasures'. Carol had a wonderful eye and filled her home with precious, unique items.
Carol loved cooking, sewing, all kinds of crafts and puzzles, and was constantly trying something new. She was a lovely, gracious, intelligent, fun and very creative woman. An old family friend once commented that the one thing everyone loved about Mel was CAROL. Alzheimer's, the cruelest of thieves, robbed Carol of small bits of herself, but was no match for her character and spirit which shone through to the end.
Carol is survived by daughter Rachel and her husband Chris Stephens of Crescent City, CA; sister Barbara and Chuck Hillman of Orange, CA and many nieces and nephews and their families. There will be no memorial, but Carol, my beloved Mum, will be remembered and adored always. She will be cremated and her ashes scattered at sea, joining her sweetheart once more. Only You can make the darkness bright…"
