Dr. Charlene Esther West Obituary
DR. CHARLENE ESTHER WEST 1934 - 2013 Charlene West left her family and friends on Friday, 4/12/13, and joined our Lord in heaven. Charlene was born on 11/27/1934 to Charles and Esther Humphrey in South Gate, California. She was a 28 year resident of Riverside County. Charlene attended Downey High School and graduated at the young age of 16. She later graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a BS in physics. Her first position was with North American Rockwell on the Mercury space program. While her technical degree served her well, being an educator was her real passion. She first started teaching at Escondido High School's Adult Education program at night which allowed her to earn a Master's Degree in mathematics at the United States International University. She started teaching at Valley High School in Escondido and was subsequently recruited to join the San Diego County Office of Education as a Coordinator of Curriculum. While working at the El Cajon Unified School District, she attended USC and earned a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology. Charlene held positions of influence and considerable responsibility at El Cajon, Desert Sands and Rialto Unified School Districts. Charlene's other educational contributions included service as a part-time professor at National University, Palomar College and Chapman University. Charlene was an active member of The USC Alumni Club of the Inland Empire, Phi Delta Kappa, American Association of University Women and Corona Circle City Kiwanis. Charlene was always giving something to someone. Her most precious contribution was her gift of friendship that she willingly shared with so many. She will be missed here but is now in the loving embrace of the Lord. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Scott Brewbaker; her sister Gail; stepdaughter Jennifer; three grandchildren; two nieces; three great nieces and one great nephew. A Memorial will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, 11:00 AM at Thomas Miller Mortuary, 1118 E. 6th St., Corona. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charlene's name to USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
