Clifford and Joyce Foss Obituary
CLIFFORD J. FOSS (Lt. Col., USAF Ret) JOYCE E. (KNEVETT) FOSS Clifford J. Foss, (Lt Col, USAF Ret.), 94, and his devoted wife, Joyce E. (Knevett) Foss, 88, of Riverside, CA, both passed away peacefully on February 25, 2016, just hours apart. They were surrounded by their loving family. Clifford was born on September 1, 1921 to Allie and Gladys Foss in Groveton, NH, the eldest, and last surviving son, of six boys. Joyce was born on March 30, 1927 in Bermondsey, England. She was the youngest of three children and the only daughter of William and Bertha Knevett. In 1942, Clifford joined the Army Air Corp. He served as a troop transport pilot, flying the C47 out of England. He participated in the D-Day Invasion and the Market Garden Operations. During the war, he met his future wife, Joyce, who was a secretary in London. After the war, Joyce sailed to America and they were married in 1946 in Lancaster, NH. In 1947 Clifford re-entered the military, this time with the U.S. Air Force. During his career, he served as a B-47 instructor pilot and flew the B-52 for 9 years. Staff positions he held included Base Operations Officer, Bomb Squadron Commander, Bomb Wing Assistant Deputy Director of Operations, and Director of Tactics at the 15th Air Force HQ. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and The French Legion of Honor. After a 30 year Air Force career, Clifford flew for a private Riverside air charter service and worked for the State of California Unemployment Office. In his down time, Clifford enjoyed camping and playing tennis with his family. Joyce was an extraordinary wife and mother, and her family was her life. When she had rare time to herself, she loved to read and instilled that love in her children. She was an experienced seamstress, an expert at knitting and counted cross stitch, and she loved baking. She was kind, caring and patient and extremely generous with her time and talents. Clifford and Joyce were married for 68 years. They were devoted parents to and survived by their 8 children: David, Jean Ann, Donna, Sarah (Alan), Brian (Judy), Audrey, John, and Eric (Jennifer). They also leave behind 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. They were preceded in death by granddaughter, Briana, and great grandson, Austin. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 9th at 11 A.M., at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 4268 Lime St., Riverside CA. Interment will immediately follow at the Riverside National Cemetery.
