Cynthia A. Burnham Obituary
CYNTHIA A. BURNHAM 1/14/1946 to 8/14/2016 Cynthia Ardis Burnham of Riverside, California, died at the Parkview Community Hospital on August 14, 2016, following a period of declining health. She was 70 years old. Cyndi was born in Malden, Massachusetts, January 14, 1946, to Robert and Ethel (Humphrey) Burnham. Cyndi grew up in Reading, Mass. Some of her favorite memories were of growing up next door to cousins and spending summer vacations with them at her grandparents William and Elinda Hazlett's camp at Swain's Lake in Barrington, N.H. She greatly enjoyed swimming, water skiing, canoeing, and cookouts, along with a certain number of youthful hijinks. During her school years, she was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow. She graduated from Reading High School in 1964 and from Mary Washington College (Fredericksburg, Va.) in 1968 with a B.A. in Spanish. With a gift for fluency in both Spanish and Portuguese, part of her coursework involved a 1966 fellowship in Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Relocating to Orange County, California, in 1969, Cyndi's bilingual prowess served her well when she joined Orange County Social Services - first as an eligibility technician and later as a social service assistant - and where she worked until 1985. She was an interpreter for her own client interviews and for other employees and was a certified translator of documents from Spanish to English for case files. In 1986 Cyndi joined the federal government and worked in the Social Security Administration Office in Santa Ana from 1986 until 1996, whereupon she joined the San Bernardino SSA office, working as a hearing office clerk from 1986 until retiring in 2007. She won a number of awards at the San Bernardino Office of Hearings and Appeals during her years in that office, for excellence in both individual and team efforts. Cyndi was predeceased by her parents and by beloved grandparents Frederic and Lillian (Jordan) Humphrey and William and Elinda (Shaw Burnham) Hazlett. She is survived by cousins including Eugene Burnham (Martha) of Ferris, Texas; Carlene Staton of Warren, Mich.; Louise O'Donald (Jay) of Moultonborough, N.H.; Martha Burnham (Bob Taylor) of Northwood, N.H.; Edith Burnham (Jerry Freedman) of Burlington, Mass.; and Elaine Burnham of Rochester, N.H. and many friends. Interment will be in Montecito Memorial Park, 3520 East Washington St., Colton.
