David E. Freeland Obituary
DAVID E. FREELAND David E. Freeland, age 86, passed away from heart failure on August 23, 2016 at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino, CA. He was born in 1930 in Loma Linda, CA and grew up in Whittier, CA. He had lived at Plymouth Village in Redlands, CA for 3 years, previously in Angelus Oaks, CA for 28 years (1985-2013), and Fullerton, CA for 22 years (1969-1991). David served in the U.S. Army, Camp Chaffee in Arkansas (1952-1954). He graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a M.A. in Secondary Education and Social Science in 1958 and Cal State Fullerton, M.A. in Spanish, Linguistics in 1971. David taught Spanish in jr. high school and college in Long Beach, Lakewood and Fullerton, CA where he retired from Fullerton College in 1983. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Redlands, CA. Dave loved to read about history. He and his wife Joyce were avid gardeners, and they loved square dancing and living in the mountains. He and Joyce were part of the Angelus Oaks Emergency Preparedness group. Dave and Joyce loved to travel, and attended over 2 dozen Elderhostels. David was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Westerhout Freeland who died on June 16, 2011 in Redlands, CA; and parents Howard and Harriette Freeland of Whittier, CA. He is survived by his daughter Karen Freeland Frey of Whittier, CA; son Steve Freeland of La Habra; daughter-in-law Janice Freeland and grandchildren Ben, Meg and her husband Satoru; and great-grandchild Andrew. Memorial Service will be at 10am on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive, Redlands, CA. Burial will be private at Rose Hills, Whittier. A second Memorial Service will be at 2pm on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Plymouth Village, Redlands, CA
