David Kenneth Mann Obituary
DAVID KENNETH MANN, MAJOR, USAF April 2, 1938 - July 4, 2014 David was born to Gerald and Ludwina Mann in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Villa Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. In 1956, he met his beloved wife, Barbara Jean Mann and were married 54 yrs before her passing in July 2013. David earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1960 from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana and a Master of Arts degree in speech communication at the University of Kansas in 1966. In addition he attended the University of Southern California for doctorate level studies. Commissioned through Officer Training School in August 1963, he attended Supply Officer School at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas. David received honorable discharge in June 1975 after tours of duty in Supply, teaching for the Air Force Academy, serving as a Historical Staff Officer with the Seventh Air Force in Vietnam, as well as an Assistant Professorship of Aerospace Studies with Air Force ROTC at the University of Idaho. After relocating to Torrance and then Riverside, California, he retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1984 as a Major with twenty years of service. He spent the remainder of his career in Civil Service employment at March Air Force Base. In addition to his honorable service to his country, David was an incredible orator. He taught speech communication classes at Riverside Community College for more than 35 years. He loved teaching and enjoyed the time with his students. David also was an active volunteer and leader in youth sports throughout the Inland Empire. Both with AYSO and CYSA-South, David dedicated countless hours scheduling games, coordinating referees, coaching his son's teams and serving the respective organizations. He also coached numerous little league baseball teams, keeping incredibly detailed statistics, in both Torrance and Riverside. David was a loving brother and father, and was very proud of the accomplishments of his family. David was taken from us to be with God unexpectedly on 4th of July 2014, a sad but fitting end for a man who was immensely proud of his military service. He left behind his sister, June Mann-Haack (David); sons Randy (Marci) and Danny (Jenny); grandchildren Madeline, Miller, Jillian, Aemelia; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His constant companion to the very end was the toy poodle he and Barbara shared for twelve years, KOBE. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Air Force Village West (17050 Arnold Drive, Riverside, CA) his beloved retirement community on Saturday, July 12 at 2:00 pm. Light food and refreshments will be available. A private interment will be on Tuesday, July 15 @ Riverside National Cemetery.
