David Young-ho Tsai M.D. Obituary
DAVID YOUNG-HO TSAI, MD. January 1949 - September 11, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. David Young-ho Tsai, at age 64, after a brave confrontation with liver cancer. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. David was born to Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Shaling Tsai in Taipei on January 2, 1949, just weeks after the family had escaped from the Chinese mainland at the time of the Communist revolution. The family immigrated to the US when David was seven, and he grew up in West Virginia, Virginia, and Ohio. He graduated from North High School in Columbus and obtained his medical degree from Ohio State University. He came to Southern California for an internship in the mid-1970s and decided immediately that this was where he wanted to stay. He worked for over 30 years in Emergency Medicine (Arcadia Methodist, Moreno Valley, and San Dimas hospitals). David was known by staff and patients as a caring and skillful physician whose relaxed manner helped to put patients at ease. Many people owe their lives to him. David and his wife Lynda have lived in Diamond Bar, CA for the past 23 years and raised three beautiful and talented children. David was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed many trips with good friends out to sea locally and in Baja, as well as to fish in northern lakes. He was a wrestler in high school and supported tennis and wrestling at Diamond Bar HS, even well after his daughter Jill had graduated from the tennis team there - he loved to encourage young people. He was a passionate fan of Ohio State football - Go Bucks! He was also a lover of golf, even making his own clubs. Once he shot a hole-in-one and won a beetle green truck in which he took the kids on many a magical road trip. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Loretta Shih, and brother Dr. Leonard Tsai. He is survived by his wife Lynda Reed Tsai and their children Brandon, Jill, and Ellen, as well as by his sister Sheila Tsai Whincup (Greg, Sooke, BC, Canada), brother-in-law Peter Shih (San Diego), sister-in-law, Rosa Tsai (New Orleans), nephews Theodore, Mark, William, and Thomas, grand-nephews and grand-niece, plus many extended family members, and last but by far not least, his best and truest friend, David Ackerman (Cincinnati). David worked hard and played hard. His life had challenges but he lived it with generosity, patience, courage, and forgiveness. He had a huge heart and made amazingly warm connections with all he met. We will miss his presence terribly, and remember him always. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 17th at 11am, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia, CA (400 W. Duarte Road, Arcadia, just east of Baldwin Ave). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the Good Shepherd Church, the Ohio State University Medical School, or a .
