Dominick Fortino Obituary
DOMINICK FORTINO Dominick entered eternal rest on July 1, 2013, with family by his side in his home of 40 years. He was born on February 14, 1936 to parents, Harry & Nora Fortino in Pontiac, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dominick and Teresa (Cascarelli) Fortino; and Lorinne L. & Stella Mae Rousch Harper; parents, Harry Amadeo Fortino and Nora Mae Harper Fortino Cooper; brothers, Billy, John & Peter; and sons Dominick Lorinne II and Jeffry Lyle. Dominick married his high school sweetheart, Joan Louise Guest on April 14, 1954, then entered the United States Air Force on April 25. Dominick proudly served in the U.S.A.F. as crew chief-flight engineer on C-117's at Ashiya AFB, Japan in the Military Air Lift Command, and on KC-97's in the 97th Bomb Wing at Lincoln AFB, Nebraska in the Strategic Air Command. With the demise of prop planes, he retrained into the computer-electronic communications field. He served two European tours and at March AFB, CA in this area. He earned many awards and commendations, including Good Conduct with Oak Leaf Clusters, a Presidential Unit Citation and was named S.A.C. man of the month in July 1967. He designed the 33rd Comm. Sq. logo and graduated from the N.C.O. Academy at Barksdale AFB, LA prior to his 1974 retirement. The technical, supervisoral, and management skills attained in the U.S.A.F. served him well in his civilian career in the medical imaging field for the next 20+ years, until illness forced early retirement. Of all the "hats" he wore, proud grandfather and great grandfather, made him happier while babysitting two of his great-grandchildren while their mother completed nurses training. He was also the Mr. Fix It of the neighborhood, glad to give advice, help and the tools needed for the job at hand. He always kept in touch with old friends going back to grade school, service buddies and co-workers as well as extended family. He will be sorely missed by many. Dominick will be greatly missed by his family, wife, Joan; sons Michael (Sharon), Scott and Joel Fortino, all of Riverside, CA; grandchildren Linda Cheric Fortino Schafer of Lincoln, AL, Christopher (Lori) of Murrieta, CA, and Dominique (Nick) Bazanos of Beaumont, CA; great grandchildren, Malcolm Shafer, Aiden, Makenzie and Sophie Bazanos and Madeline Fortino; also uncles, Joseph Fortino (Alice) of Waterford, MI, Robert Harper of Rochester Hills, MI, and sister Roberta (Bill) Bonkaski of Cordes Junction, AZ; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery on Sept. 6, 2013 at 2:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a homeless or injured veteran's organization of your choice would be a welcome tribute to Dominick. Arrangements Entrusted to the Care of 9695 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92503 (951) 785-4071. Please go to www.akesfamilyfuneralhome.com and sign the guest book.
