Donald Bender Obituary
DONALD BENDER Don passed away at his home at the age of 79, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 26, 1934 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to Floyd and Esther Bender. Don graduated from Helix High School in 1953. Upon graduation, he entered the military and became a paratrooper/ infantryman in the elite 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He graduated from Riverside City College in 1964. He spent 34 years carrying ID#18 for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. He worked patrol and had a successful tenure as an investigator where he was involved in investigating many of Riverside's high-profile homicides including tbe Bobby Crawford kidnapping and The Great Norco Bank Robbery. He retired as a Sergeant in 1991. He and two friends formed a background investigation company called Triad Diversified Services. He also worked as a background investigator for the Riverside Police Department for ten years. He was a member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Church; the Riverside Kiwanis Club, where he loved volunteering for their anual turkey bar-b-que; delivering Meals on Wheels and participating in numerous community projects. He enjoyed playing racquetball, playing at golf, and working out several times a week. Don and Nancy enjoyed many years on the river at Lake Havasu, Arizona, boating and riding Seedoos together. Don was the friend you could always count on to help with anything you needed, at anytime you needed it, and would show up with a smile on his face. No matter the circumstances, when asked how he was doing, his response was always "Absolutely GREAT". He is survived by his wife and best friend of fifty years, Nancy; sons Marc Bender (Carla), Jeff Bender (2009), Bruce Bender (1983), and daughter Kelli Bender; 5 grandchildren: Sam Bender, Escondido; Jacob Bender, Nashville, Tennessee; Joseph Bender (1986); Marley Bender, Riverside; and Rachel Bender, Chicago, Illinois; 3 great grandchildren and numerous special nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Bruce Bender (Mary), Seattle, Washington; sister Roseann Reinhart, Oceanside; Terry Bender (1982) and brother-in-law Leroy Smith (MaryJane), Oklahoma; and sister-in-law Patti Sprague (Chuck), Riverside. Services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 12noon at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to City of Hope, 1500 Duarte Blvd., Duarte, California 91010.
