Donald C. Erwin Obituary
DONALD C. ERWIN Our beloved Donald C. Erwin, age 93 of Riverside, passed away February 22, 2014. Donald was born in Concord, NE on November 24, 1920 to Carol and Robert Erwin. He is pre-deceased by his sister Lola Erlandson, and is survived by his wife of 65 years Veora E. Erwin; son J. Daniel Erwin; daughter Myriam A. Casey; and five grandchildren: Danielle, Andrew, Matthew, Brandon, and Kevin. He attended Wayne College, NE 1939-40 and served as a Tech 3, U.S. Army 129th General Hospital in Wales (GB) in WWII 1942-1946. He earned a BSc Agronomy (Honors) 1949 and MA Plant Pathology 1950, both from U. Nebraska, and a PhD Plant Pathology from U.C. Davis 1953. That same year he joined the Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside as a Junior Plant Pathologist. Dr. Erwin was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship 1959, and promoted to Professor of Plant Pathology, UC Riverside 1966. Dr. Erwin published 115 technical papers including three invitational book chapters, edited a book on Phytophthora 1982, and was senior author of "Phytophthora Diseases Worldwide" 1996. He also published 43 semi-technical publications on diseases of field crops in California. At UCR Dr. Erwin directed twelve graduate students who received PhD degrees and one student who received an MS degree in Plant Pathology. He served on the steering committee of the interdepartmental Master's degree program on Pest Management from which several students received MS degrees in Pest Management under his direction. He participated in team-taught advanced Plant Pathology courses, organized the course, Diagnosis of Plant Diseases 1975-1986, and was chairman of the Department of Plant Pathology 1977-1980. He retired in 1992 as Professor Emeritus. Additional achievement awards include Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society, Mycological Assoc. of America, Sigma Xi (scientific research society), and an Honorary Member of the North American Alfalfa Improvement Conference. In 1997 Dr. Erwin received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Pacific Division of the American Phytopathological Society. A vigil will be held Thursday, Mar. 6 at 5:30 pm with a rosary from 7:30 to 8:00 pm at Preston and Simons Mortuary chapel, 3358 Mission Inn Ave, Riverside, CA. Funeral services will be held Friday, Mar. 7 at 10:00 am at Saint Catherine of Alexandria Catholic church, 7005 Brockton Ave, Riverside, CA, 951-781-9855. As a WWII veteran, Dr. Erwin's burial service will be held at Riverside National Cemetery at 12:15 pm, using assembly area #8 located at 22495 Van Buren Blvd, Riverside, CA. 92518. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Donald C. Erwin's name can be made to St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church or to the UCR Foundation (Botanic Gardens), UCR, Riverside CA 92521.
