Dorothy Wood Obituary
1919 – 2017
Of Camden, NJ and Riverside, CA. On October 29, 2017, age 98, passed away in Riverside, CA. Daughter of the late John and Sophia Wagner of Camden, NJ and wife of the late John Robert Wood of Collingswood, NJ and Riverside, CA. Born on July 20, 1919 in Toledo, OH, raised in Wilmington, DE and Camden, NJ, and lived in eight states and three foreign countries with her U.S. Air Force officer husband, before retiring in Riverside. Beloved sister of Roy of Ocean City, NJ and Jack of Palm City, FL. Predeceased by brothers William of Mt. Laurel, NJ and Eugene of El Centro, CA. Survived by her three sons: John, Jr. (Karen) of Freedom, PA; William (Katherine) of Parker, CO; and Peter (Terri) of Menifee, CA; and by nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Dorothy lived an eventful and fulfilling life as a wife, mother, homemaker, volunteer, and working professional. Her 52-year marriage to John was characterized by frequent military reassignments between 1943 and 1969. At each new duty station, Dorothy would set up their quarters, identify schools for their children, participate in military social activities, and frequently also would work in Government Service administrative positions. Dorothy remained active during John's retirement and for many years following his 1995 death. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977 at age 58 from California State University, San Bernardino; worked as a proctor for professional certification exams in the Los Angeles metropolitan area; and served as an information desk volunteer at Kaiser Permanente Hospital for over 40 years.
Dorothy's life was commemorated with a Celebration of Life at the Altavita Retirement Community in Riverside, CA, and by a Mass of Christian Burial prior to her in interment alongside her late husband at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC.
