Dorris L. McGovern Obituary
DORIS L. MCGOVERN, 97, of Arlington, TX, and formerly of Riverside, CA, died Friday, February 13, 2015 at her residence in Arlington, TX. She was born on October 3, 1917, in Newark, NJ, the daughter of Wallace L. Hedges, Sr. and Myrtle (Courter) Hedges. Mrs. McGovern completed Nursing School at Newark City Hospital and passed the board exams to become a Registered Nurse in 1939. She worked in various departments of the hospital, and then as a nurse at the local Tung Sol factory. During the war, she briefly became "Rosie the Riveter" on the assembly line in an aircraft factory, but one of her fellow nursing students called her to come back to nursing because of a severe shortage of nurses. She continued to work in various hospitals in New Jersey until mid-1940 when she and her husband, John G. McGovern, who pre-deceased her in 1992, moved with their growing family to California, finally settling in Riverside. They resided in Riverside and surrounding areas for over forty-eight years. She continued her nursing career with two doctors, in private practice, in Riverside until she retired. Doris became a Texas resident in 1994, when she moved, with her daughter's family, to Sulphur Springs, TX. She is survived by three sons and one daughter: Robert McGovern and wife Sandi of Wildomar, CA, Richard McGovern of Clermont, FL, Raymond McGovern and wife Kathy of Corinth, TX, and Jessica Libby and husband Donald of Alvarado, TX. She also has 13 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015 at St. James Catholic Church, 297 Texas Street, Sulphur Springs, TX at 2pm. A reception with the family will be held at Coffee off the Square, 204 Church Street, immediately following the service from 3 to 6 pm. An additional reception will be held in Wildomar, CA at the home of her son, Robert McGovern on March 28, 2015 from 2 to 4 pm at 24147 Brillante Dr., Wildomar, CA.
