Douglas Harold Riesland Obituary
DOUGLAS HAROLD RIESLAND passed away peacefully, surrounded by family in his Hemet, CA home on September 3, 2016. Doug spent a selfless life serving his family and community and leaves behind a legacy of hard work and love. Doug was the son of Angie and James F. Riesland. He was born June 15, 1942 in Hemet, California. He grew up on the old Riesland apricot ranch which is now a housing tract near Mayberry and State St. in Hemet. Doug graduated Hemet High in 1961 and spent his early adult years driving hay trucks for Wilbur Ast in Hemet. Doug married his wife of 53 years, Judy, in 1963, and they started their life together in Hemet. In 1970, Doug started a long and fruitful career as a Hemet Police Officer, being hired #2 out of 150 applicants. He worked for Hemet PD for about 2 years initially and left on good terms to work for his brother's irrigation company in Upper Lake, California. A chance encounter in 1976 with the then police chief of Hemet PD led to Doug moving his family back to Hemet and rejoining the police force. He worked as a Senior Patrol Officer for several years and ended his career serving as the D.A.R.E. officer in the Hemet School system, educating young children on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Doug retired from Hemet PD in 1999 and went back to his first love, the hay business. He worked for C.L. Smith in San Jacinto, first as a truck driver, then as a hay salesman. He worked there several years, only recently fully retiring, while maintaining homes in Lake Arrowhead and Hemet. Doug was an active member of the Hemet Nazarene Church for many years, contributing his talents in construction, and teaching. He made missionary trips to Africa and Russia to assist in the construction of buildings in impoverished areas. Doug's love, pride, and joy was his family. He was always proud to say he put all four of his kids through college. Doug was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed many out of state hunting and fishing trips, and camping with his grandchildren at Red's Meadow in the Sierras. Doug is survived by wife Judy; sons Matt, and Brad; daughters Julie Detwiler and Tracy Hall; sister Esther Morrow; 6 grandsons; and 2 granddaughters. Services for Douglas Riesland will be held Saturday, September 17th at 11:00 am at the Bible Fellowship Church in Hemet located at 26835 Columbia St. A celebration of life will be held after at a residence nearby (details provided at service).
