Duane Elson Swendler Obituary
DUANE ELSON SWENDLER Age 88, of Hemet, CA, passed away March 3, 2014 at Hemet Valley Medical Center. He was born October 15, 1925 to Wilbur and Irene Swendler in Fort Wayne, IN. The family moved to Riverside, CA when Duane was 5 years old. Duane graduated from Poly High School and Riverside City College. He joined the Navy in WWII, serving in the Pacific until April, 1946. After his return to Riverside, he met and married Janet Louise Gray in 1948. The family moved to Banning, CA in 1962. Duane spent his career in finance and real estate, retiring as District Manager at Pacific Federal, aka Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loans, in Palm Springs, CA. He served as President of the Palm Springs Lions Club in 1969-70. He also owned and managed several rental properties over the years. After retiring in 1982, Duane worked as a real estate broker in the Indio area. He moved to Hemet in 1990, where he shared his life for over 30 years with Joan Peddicord. Duane is survived by his two sons, Steven (Erin) of Denver, CO and Jeffrey of Beaumont, CA; his daughter, Sheryl (Roger) Hayes of Riverside, CA, and his granddaughter, Alicia Swendler, of Denver, CO. He is also survived by his cousin, Michael Jacob, and 5 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Janet Swendler. Duane was a wonderful, loving father, a caring son, and a kind hearted friend to all. He loved the sea and especially enjoyed swimming and fishing, and all creatures, great and small. He never lost interest in finance and real estate and always followed the markets closely, along with world events. He was easy going and enjoyed simple pleasures, such as a good science fiction story, the latest movie, a morning walk, or a meal with family (capped off with anything chocolate!). He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations made to Duane's favorite charities, the Paralyzed Veterans of America at pva.org, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org. No formal services are planned. Well wishes may be sent to the family.
