Earl Oatman Obituary
EARL OATMAN Earl Oatman died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 13, 2015. Born in Texas and raised in Oklahoma, Earl was at Clark Field in the Philippines when it was attacked on Dec. 8, 1941. He escaped during the Bataan Death March, hid for a year in the jungle, then suffered three years as a Japanese prisoner of war. Returning home, Earl earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Missouri, then graduated from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in Entomology. He worked at the University of Wisconsin then moved to UC Riverside in 1962, publishing over 200 research papers. Retiring in 1988, Earl and Virginia, his much-loved wife of 56 years, enjoyed their three children, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many dear friends, colleagues and former students. An intelligent man, Earl never forgot his simple country upbringing and was always ready to share his experiences, friendship, love and quiet Christian faith. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 8, at 11:30 AM, at Acheson & Graham Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Ave. Riverside. Burial is at 2:00 PM at the Riverside National Cemetery with a reception following. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
