Eleanor Kirkley Hampson Obituary
ELEANOR KIRKLEY HAMPSON died on January 1, 2017 at her home in Monterey, CA after a brief period of declining health. Mrs. Hampson, the only daughter of Richard Williams Kirkley and Lucy Tolerton Kirkley, was born on January 3, 1916 in Los Angeles, CA. She was a graduate of Marlborough School in Los Angeles and Pomona College in Claremont. She met her late husband Richard B. Hampson, Jr. at Pomona, and they were married in Los Angeles at her parents' home in March 1941. They first lived in San Francisco, where her husband was with Wells Fargo Bank. Their daughters Lucy and Betsey and son Kirk were born there. They then lived in Palo Alto before moving to Riverside, Richard's hometown, in the late 1940s, where their daughter Sarah was born. As a homemaker raising four children, Mrs. Hampson lived a fully engaged life in Riverside for 50 years, where she made lifelong friends. She was active in the Junior League of Riverside, a member of the Victoria Club, where she played a great game of golf and a decent bridge game; she was an active member first of All Saints Episcopal Church and then St. George's Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry at both parishes. She was proud to be a delegate from the Diocese of Los Angeles to the national convention of the Episcopal Church in 1976 which endorsed the ordination of women as priests. Moving to Monterey in 2005, she was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Corral de Tierra. Until recently she was an avid reader, worked her daily cross word puzzles, and kept current reading newspapers, news magazines and the New Yorker. Mrs. Hampson and her husband traveled extensively. She had a special love of her trips to Africa to see the animals. From her childhood summers in the Sierra Nevada at Huntington Lake Camp for Girls, she gained a lifelong love of the mountains. Into her 70's, she enjoyed pack trips with her family into the Sierras, Wyoming and Montana, with a particular love of Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness. She also reveled in her annual visits to Jenny Lake Lodge at the base of the Grand Tetons, and introduced her grandchildren to the Circle 8 Ranch in Montana and the Jenny Lake Lodge. Mrs. Hampson is survived by her children Betsey Pearson (Steve) of Carmel, Kirk Hampson (Barbara) of Portland, Oregon, Sarah Hampson (David Capell) of Oakland; 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Richard, and her daughter Lucy. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Those who wish to remember Eleanor may do so by making donations in her memory to Nature Conservancy or Carmel Public Library Foundation. The family wishes to thank the caregivers who made Mrs. Hampson's life comfortable until the end.
