Elena Vigil Morente Whyrick Obituary
ELENA VIGIL MORENTE WHYRICK Elena was born July 31, 1926, in Havana, Cuba. She departed this life November 23, 2015, at her home, surrounded by family and friends, ascending to Heaven to take care of her loved ones from above as she did for so long here on Earth. Elena had a rough childhood having to drop out of school at an early age. As a young adult she managed and ran the jewelry department at Sears Roebuck in downtown Havana. Elena married a banker and had a successful life with two beautiful daughters in Cuba. Communism changed everything she knew and forced her to leave her husband and her country of birth behind at the age of 37. She ventured with her two daughters to Miami and met up with her mom and sister. Grace United Methodist Church on Linden St. relocated her and the girls to Riverside, California, where she remarried and had another beautiful daughter and an incredible son. Elena's success story is the definition of the American Dream. She began her career as a salesperson at Miller's Surplus on Market Street, eventually opening several of her own businesses: Elena's Gifts on Main Street and the Shirt House in the Brockton Arcade, which she expanded to the Pink House fabric stores on Tyler Street. Elena did very well and saved her earnings to distribute to all her family and friends, a true cornerstone for all that surrounded her. She is survived by her sister Blanca; by her children Maria, Judy, Margaret, and Steven; by her grandchildren Christina, Michelle, Jenni, Matthew, Ashley, Aidan, and Hannah, and by her great grandchildren Austin, Calvin, Clayton, Asher, Graham, Madelyn, Tyler, Ken Leonidas, Jacob, and Chloe. She was preceded in death by her first husband Jorge, by her second husband Charles, by her sister and brother-in-law Olga and Julio, by her brothers Gabriel "Cuco" and Jose "Pepe", and by her sister-in-law and husband Judith and Luis Pablo. The celebration of Elena's life will be at 12 p.m. on December 18, 2015, at her home on 2181 Whitestone Drive, Riverside, CA 92506.
