Her father immigrated from Italy to the United States and taught himself the accordion as a young man so he could play in the Bowery district in San Francisco before going on the national Vaudeville circuit. Betty's mother, from Jackson, Mississippi, was a Chicago Conservatory of Music trained concert pianist and met her husband in Chicago on the Vaudeville stage.Betty played piano.
