Elizabeth H. "Betty" Berlin Obituary
ELIZABETH H. ("BETTY") BERLIN died peacefully at age 103 November 22, 2015 at Buena Vista Assisted Living. Born in Equality, Illinois in 1912, she graduated with a degree in History from Maryville College in Tennessee in 1934, married Ed Berlin in 1941 in San Diego where he was employed at Ryan Aeronautical as an engineer during WWII. She lived most of her life in Indianapolis; in 1974 she and Ed retired to Hemet where they enjoyed many years of RVing and square dancing. They settled into Golden Village in 1980. Betty volunteered at Whittier Elementary School as a reading tutor and at Hemet Hospice. She was a long time member of Faith Community Church. At Golden Village she taught water exercises for 37 years, offering the last class on her 100th birthday. After Ed died in 1999, Betty continued to reside at Golden Village Palms until just after her 100th birthday. To her children and grandchildren she was a model of graceful aging-active, involved in her community and intellectually engaged as she marked a century of life. She leaves behind a daughter, Margay Blackman (partner Ulpian Toney) of Brockport, NY; son, Jim Berlin (Ann Alger) of Dayton Ohio; four grandchildren, Lisa Berlin Jackson, Kate Berlin, Meryn and Justin Hall; two great granddaughters; a sister-in-law, and many dear friends, most specially Helen and Dale Quan of Hemet. A celebration of Betty's life will be held in Hemet in January at the family's convenience. Those wishing to make a donation in Betty's memory please consider Hemet Hospice, 890 West Stetson, Hemet, CA 92543.
