Emery Raymond Fortner Obituary
EMERY RAYMOND FORTNER Emery Raymond Fortner, a life-long resident of Riverside, passed away on January 15, 2015 at the age of 87. A graduate of Poly High School in 1945 and Riverside Community College in 1949, Ray, as he was known to his friends, served his community as a member of the City of Riverside Fire Department for 30 years. During his career in the Department he served in the fire suppression, prevention and arson investigation divisions, as well as teaching fire science at Riverside Community College. Eventually becoming the City's Assistant Fire Chief, he retired in 1980. Since then, he has spent his days crafting wood lawn ornaments that decorated many Riverside homes during the holidays and fishing off the coast of Gold Beach, Oregon. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 1999. He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Fortner, Nancy Tobin and Martha Roberts, as well as six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The memorial service will be held at 11 am on January 28 at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary and the interment, with Fire Department honors, at Olivewood Cemetery at 1 pm. A viewing will be held on January 27 from 5 to 6 pm at Garden of Prayer. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Riverside Community College Foundation, 3564 Ramona Dr., Riverside, CA, 92506 in memory of Ray Fortner for the Ben Clark Training Center.
