ESTHER MAAS NELSON, age 101, died Wednesday, February 4, 2015. She was born on a large wheat farm in Saskatchewan, Canada on June 9, 1913. She was next to the youngest of five children. She was predeceased by her husband, George J. Nelson, her son, John W. Mallernee, her step daughter, Maryan Jessen, and her siblings Ellis Maas, Carl Maas, Noema Knopf and Arthur Maas. She is survived by her son, Rollin (Karen Fleming) Mallernee II, and the children of her second family, Myrna (John) Odom and Steve Nelson; her grandchildren, George (Theresa) Odom, Jeffrey (Beth) Jessen, and Suzanne (Rob) Taylor; her surrogate daughter, Carol Maas; many nieces and nephews and six great grandchildren. In the seventh grade Esther started violin lessons. In the ninth grade she began playing in a radio orchestra at Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She continued her violin lessons and finally earned a seat next to the concert master. After attending Union College and Emmanuel Missionary College, she married, moved to Atlanta, GA, where her husband finished dental school, and she had two children. In 1970 she moved to Loma Linda, CA, and became Director of Volunteers at the Loma Linda University Medical Center. On December 18, 1971, she married Dr. George J. Nelson, a chemistry professor. They were happily married for 22 years. Until she was in her mid-seventies, Esther sang in the John T. Hamilton Chorale that toured England and Hong Kong. Esther loved people and life and her home was a welcoming meeting place where friends and acquaintances could enjoy good food and fun. She had a very close circle of young women friends that she loved who all called her "Aunt Esther." A memorial service will be held March 8, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at the Azure Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 2000, Loma Linda, CA 92354.
