EVELYNN ELIZABETH CHEADLE THOMAS May 16, 1928 - January 4, 2014 ROBERT JOHN THOMAS May 4, 1926 - November 16, 2015 Bob and Evelynn met at San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1949. He was studying for the ministry and she was working on a MA in Christian Education. Evelynn was born in Milner, ND to Elizabeth (Fairweather) and Leslie T. Cheadle. She grew up in Long Beach and Riverside, CA and graduated from the College of Wooster in 1949. Bob was born on Hainan Island, China to Meta (Oelfke) and David H. Thomas. He spent his childhood on Hainan, returning to the U.S. on the eve of WWII. His teenage years were spent in Parkville, MO, and Oklahoma City, OK. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, having initially failed the physical for being underweight. Advised by the recruiter to eat a bunch of bananas and return in the afternoon, he successfully enlisted on his second try. Due to a series of transportation mishaps, he eventually was assigned to duty in the Panama Canal Zone, where he served until his discharge following the end of the war. He graduated from West Texas State College in 1949. Bob served as Pastor of three churches, First Presbyterian Church, Jonesville, MI, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Escondido, CA, and Victoria Presbyterian Church, Riverside, CA, and as Parish Associate at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Riverside, CA. Evelynn was active in music activities in both the church and community. She was active in Presbyterian Women on all levels and was known for her hospitality. In retirement, Bob and Evelynn moved to Pagosa Springs, CO and then to Dayton, OH. During their lives together they traveled the world, visiting five continents and countries too numerous to list. They camped all across the U.S. and Western Canada, pulling their travel trailer over mountain passes, across deserts and through canyons, always seeking new places, visiting old friends and family and making numerous new friends everywhere they went. They are survived by their five children, Carol (Charles) Greenwald of Dayton, OH, John (Cathie) Thomas of LaPine, OR, Paul (Denise) Thomas of Costa Rica, James (Dawn) Thomas of Bayfield, CO, and Stephen (Laurie) Thomas of Vista, CA; seventeen grandchildren, David (Jennifer) Greenwald, Allison (Douglas) Blanton, Laura (Tom) Hentges, Karen (Jeffrey) Sagner, Riley Thomas, Leslie (Nate) Pugmire, Bradley Thomas, Andrew Thomas, Spencer Thomas, Faith Thomas, Hope Thomas, Grace Thomas, Ian Thomas, Elizabeth Thomas, Austin Thomas, Garret Thomas and Colby Thomas; and ten great grandchildren, Kaelie and Summer Greenwald, Andrew, Charles, and Daniel Blanton, Owen Hentges, Wesley and Walter Sagner, and Makenzie and Aubrey Pugmire. A service celebrating their lives will be held Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 4495 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92501. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church.
