FAROLYN WILSON HANSCOM Farolyn Wilson Hanscom of Riverside passed into the hands of her Lord on the morning of September 11, 2013 at her home following a long illness. She was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine on July 24, 1935, the only child of Ada Pearl Patterson Wilson and Clarence Linwood Wilson. Farolyn was the first college graduate of her family, earning a BS in Business Education in 1958 from Husson College in Bangor, Maine. She married her husband of 55 years, Richard Ladwick Hanscom, Jr, in May 1958. After earning her teaching credential, she taught for a year at Bangor High School. Taking time off to raise a family, Farolyn returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher in the high schools of Montor Falls and Horseheads, New York before accepting a position at East Corning High in Corning, New York that she held until her family moved to Riverside in 1976. She served as a Business Education teacher for twenty years at Norte Vista High School, serving as the ROP Office Occupations teacher for the last ten years of her time at Norte Vista. Farolyn was nominated by her colleagues three times as teacher of the year, finishing as runner-up one year at the county level. She was an Advisor of the Future Business Leaders Association Chapter at Norte Vista, a member of the California Business Education Association and Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon. During the last few years of her career, Farolyn taught evening business classes at Riverside Community College. Farolyn retired in 1997 and enjoyed traveling with husband Richard to Alaska in 1999 and 2008. They also made several cross-country trailer/motorhome trips to spend summers in their home state of Maine at Whispering Pines campground in East Orland. Farolyn was an active member of First Christian Church, prior to that, she served the Moreno Valley Congregational Church in many ways including Moderator. She and Richard attended the first United Church of Christ Marriage Encounter in California and continued to be involved in the organization for several years. Farolyn is survived by her husband Richard; their daughter Cheryl Hanscom Wilcox (Randall), son Richard Ladwick Hanscom III (Yvonne), and their four grandchildren, Arianne Wilcox, Alyssa Wilcox, Erin Hanscom, and Bryan Hanscom. Memorial services will be held on October 5 at 10 am followed by a reception at First Christian Church, located at 4055 Jurupa Ave (at Brockton) in Riverside. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her name.
