Frances Valentean "Val" Hamilton Obituary
FRANCES "VAL" VALENTEAN HAMILTON Frances "Val" Valentean Hamilton, of Livermore, California, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2015. She was 81 years old. Val was born in Valentine, Nebraska on May 14, 1934 to Kermit and Lorraine Flowers. Val boarded at Saint Wenceslaus School in Wahoo, Nebraska during WWll while her parents worked in defense plants in Omaha. After WWII, Val, her brother Kenneth, and her parents all moved to Jeffrey Manor in the south side of Chicago where Val attended middle school, Aquinas High School and finally Bowen HIgh School, where she graduated with honors. Val married Kenneth Hamilton, also of Jeffrey Manor, on January 10, 1954 in a Catholic Ceremony. Kenneth passed away in 1987. Val never remarried. Val and Kenneth have four children who survive her, all born at St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island, IL: Michael Paul Hamilton b. 1954, Raymond Kermit Hamilton b. 1955, Lorraine Lee Shover b. 1959, Kenneth Alan Hamilton b. 1961. She has 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She has two younger brothers who survive her, Kevin Flowers of Bend Oregon, and Kirk Flowers of Spokane Washington. Val and her family moved to California in 1961. Val was a working mother in the 60's and 70's when it was not as common as it is today. She was a Dental Assistant and Office Manager. We were always amazed at her energy, focus, and perseverance. She worked, cooked, cleaned, and helped 4 kids with homework for over 25 years. She never complained. She was courteous and well-liked by all. Val, as you can imagine, did not have too much time for hobbies in those days but she did enjoy weekend gourmet cooking, as well as raising and occasionally showing her beloved basset hounds. Vacations in those days took place in the Sierra Nevada. She was widowed at the age of 54 and spent the next twenty years caring for her older sister-in-law, Doris Koester, primarily in Hemet, CA, where they enjoyed bowling and Bunko and made many wonderful friends. During this time Val and Doris were able to travel to New York City, Washington, DC, Virginia, Charleston SC, Kitty Hawk NC (where they saw the Wright Brothers Centennial) and Hawaii. Val was a very curious person who read widely and appreciated so very much of our natural world. She loved hummingbirds, butterflies and Sea Otters. She will be missed by all.
