Fred and Bette Bates

Obituary Condolences

FRED & BETTE BATES Fred was born on June 12, 1925 in Bay City, Texas and passed peacefully on February 11, 2016 in Riverside, CA from complications of Alzheimers. Bette was born on August 21, 1929 in Stith, Texas and passed peacefully on February 4, 2016 in Riverside after a long hard fought battle with bladder cancer. Fred & Bette met at the Piggly Wiggly in Merkle, Texas where she was a roller skating car hop and he was an oil rig roughneck in town for lunch. They were married on 11/3/1945 and celebrated 70 years of marriage this past November. Fred & Bette are survived by their son David (Jan) and were preceded in death by their son Jerry (Julie). They enjoyed spending time with family including six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. They both came from large families with eight children. Bette was preceded in death by her six sisters and is survived by her brother Chock Mashburn. Fred was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister and is survived by Earl, Burton Lee, LeRoy and Shirley. The Bates Family extends our appreciation to Jane Eberlein, their primary nurse and all the staff from Cambridge Hospice that provided exceptional care. We'd also like to express our appreciation to the entire staff at Meridian of Riverside (Bette) and Meridian Gardens (Fred) for the care, love and friendships they provided to Fred and Bette and the Bates Family. Fred & Bette moved to the La Sierra area in 1951 following Call Porters who sold them a set of Bible Books which began their membership with the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Fred established Bates Plumbing in 1972 and worked in the Riverside area for many years until health issues caused an early retirement. Bette worked as Office Manager for Dr. Charles Gunnoe for 43 years. Fred's pastimes were desert rock hunts, antique bottle and gun collecting. Bette enjoyed shopping and fashion. Never one to wear boring clothes; she always looked amazing with a little bling that matched the sparkle in her eyes. Please join their family and friends for a Celebration of their Lives on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 3 PM at Sierra Vista Chapel, 4920 Sierra Vista Avenue, Riverside, CA.
