Hannelies S. McFalls Obituary
HANNELIES S. MCFALLS March 6, 1928 April 22, 2015 Long-time Riverside, CA resident, Hannelies S. McFalls passed away, at age 87, on April 22, 2015. Born in East Prussia, Germany, she led a rich and varied life. As a child she witnessed the rise of the Nazi dictatorship and the outbreak of World War Two. In 1944, at age 16, she was drafted into the labor service, first harvesting potatoes, then cooking in a POW camp, and finally guarding and maintaining an anti-aircraft gun with no fuel or munitions. After liberation by US forces she went about finding her parents again and completing secondary school. She subsequently settled alone in Munich where she landed a job in an educational publishing house. While completing her Ph.D. in history at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, she met and married fellow Ph.D. student, American Richard W. McFalls, who brought her to the US in 1956. The couple settled first in Madison, SD, and then Wayne, NE, where Hannelies briefly taught history and art history alongside her husband at Wayne State Teacher's College. The couple moved to Riverside with their three young children in 1962. Hannelies was for many years a volunteer at the Riverside Public Library and the Riverside Museum. She sang in the Riverside Chorale and until recently played the recorder and was active in the American Recorder Society. She returned frequently to her native Germany, where she maintained a lively network of friends, and traveled widely across the US with visiting relatives. She is survived by her husband Richard; by their three children Oliver, Ricarda, and Laurence; and by her five grandchildren Samuel, Xander, Carley, Anna, and Nicola.
