HAROLD R. AUSTIN
Died at the age of 93 on February 22, 2018, at Altavita Village. Born August 28, 1924, near Sweetwater, Oklahoma. Oldest son of Harold and Madge Austin. Siblings include 2 brothers, Jim (deceased), Don, and 3 sisters, Evelyn, Jodi (deceased) and Dart.
Married to Rosemary Gahegan, his "Schotze", (deceased July 19, 2010) on July 2,1949 in Frankfurt, Germany. Four kids: Alan, Susie, Larry and Dave. Nine grandchildren: Alan's sons Anthony (deceased) and Matthew; Susie's daughters Jessica, Emily, Julia and son Jimmy; Larry's daughter Rachel and son Adam; Dave's son Andrew. Nine great-grandchildren: Jacqueline, Thalia, Nyssa, Connor, Zachary, Rosemary, Baxter, Sky and Vera.
Entered the U.S. Army aviation cadet program September 1943. Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel January 1977. Career highlights include: Pilot Berlin Airlift, Strategic Air Command Aircraft Commander, Squadron Commander and Staff Officer at SAC Headquarters, Base Commander and Aircraft Wing Commander. Also,Staff Officer with Joint Staff Pentagon. Command Pilot with over 10,000 flying hours in 22 different aircraft. Cold War Top Secret visual photo overflight of Soviet Union in an RB-47E on May 8, 1954. Awards include DFC with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.
Education: Brownfield High School,Texas; Air Command and Staff School, Air War College, Maxwell Field, Alabama; Bachelor's Degree, University of Nebraska; Master's Degree, George Washington University, Washington D.C.
Following retirement from the U.S. Air Force: Stock Broker, Dean Witter; Chairman, Riverside Military Affairs Committee; Marketing Chief, Air Force Village West; President March Field Museum Foundation; President Magnolia Center Rotary Club, Riverside; President, Air Force Village West Foundation; Life Member, Order of Daedalians.
