Harold R. (Hap) Johnson Obituary
HAROLD (HAP) R. JOHNSON Harold was born in Irvington, New Jersey on December 14, 1919 to parents Edward Johnson and Rose Johnson and passed on September 10, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred (Millie); four sons, Daniel Johnson (Roche) of San Diego, CA, Dwight Johnson (Cindy) of Canyon Lake, CA, Carl Johnson (Mary) of Canyon Lake, CA and Donald Johnson (Lori) of Arizona; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Hap was drafted by the Army during World War II promoting to rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. He met Navy Wave Mildred (Millie) Huth in New Jersey. They married after they were both honorably discharged. The young couple decided to move to California in 1948. Upon arriving in California Hap found work as a carpenter. Later he began working for Greshner Construction in the early 50's. Hap worked his way up the ladder starting as a superintendent and advancing to the role of Vice-President. Their first business venture was the Pink Poodle Pet Shop in Larwin Square, Tustin, CA. from 1960 to 1975. In 1964 Hap formed what is now Near-Cal Corporation. His two sons, Dwight and Carl joined their father at Near-Cal in the mid 70's. Together they developed it into one of the largest commercial contracting firms in Riverside County, specializing in large retail spaces such as Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Lowe's and movie theaters to name a few. Hap turned the reins over to his sons and went on to become the V.P. of Construction for Columbia Savings and Loan and developed such buildings with Koll Development as the Hyatt Newporter Inn and several other high rise office spaces in Irvine, CA. He was also an active member of the Canyon Lake Property Owner's Association, serving as its Director in 1980 and President in 1981. Hap retired in the early 90's but continued to consult with his sons in the family business. His golden years were spent traveling the world with his beloved wife. Hap had many accomplishments in his life but none surpassed the family that he was fiercely proud of. This year he was fortunate enough to see the 50th anniversary of the company he founded. The family will receive relatives and friends during the visitation from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 18th with a funeral service at 11:00 AM at 1st Assembly of God Church, 19740 Grand Ave., Lake Elsinore. Interment will be held privately in the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA.
