Harriett Ann Hughes Dryden McDonald Vickers Obituary
HARRIETT ANN HUGHES DRYDEN MCDONALD VICKERS Harriett was born in 1940 in Riverside, CA to Ralph and Vivienne Hughes. She grew up in Riverside, where she graduated from Poly High School in 1958, and then attended City College. She lived in various southern California cities including San Diego, Huntington Beach, Riverside and Highland. She married long-time dear friend Archie in 1994. They retired and moved north to Shingletown, CA in 1999 where they were very involved in the Open Door Community Church. In 2007, they moved to Pahrump, NV, where they immediately started attending Pahrump Community Church. While attending church with her grandmother, Harriett accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in 1951 at First Baptist Church in Riverside, CA. While at the Open Door Church in Shingletown, God moved in a fresh way in Harriett's life and she rededicated herself to Christ and was re-baptized as an expression of her total surrender to Jesus. Harriett's life was devoted to service. For more than twenty years, she worked in schools as a teacher's assistant, playground and cafeteria monitor, and also taught English as a Second Language. She consistently volunteered for leadership roles in PTA, Little League, and Junior All-American Football. She regularly served in church outreach & fellowship activities like kitchen ministries and food pantries. The last few years, she led a Bible study group for the residents of the Desert Greens community in Pahrump. After three months of poor health, the Lord called Harriett home. Harriett was preceded in death by her father Ralph Hughes and her mother Vivienne Hughes. She is survived by her loving husband Archie Vickers; her son Robert (Brenda) Dryden of Palm Desert, CA (grandchildren Phillip & Sarah); son Derek (Susie) Dryden of Highland, CA (grandchildren Danielle [John DiTrapani] & Steven); son Wes Dryden of Highland, CA (grandchildren Briana Dryden & her brother Colin Allain [Monica Luna], great-grandchildren Emma & Liam); stepdaughter Rendy McDonald of Bakersfield, CA (granddaughter Kae, great-granddaughter Raven); stepson Richard McDonald of Whittier, CA; stepson John (Lorraine) Vickers of Billerica, MA; stepdaughter Laura Vickers of Panama City, FL (grandson Wiley); stepson David Vickers of Brea, CA; and stepdaughter Melanie (Matt) Lyons of Whittier, CA (granddaughter Jenna). Harriett's family will always cherish memories of her storytelling skills, dry sense of humor, and powers of persuasion regarding vegetable consumption. She bore the burden of her children's occasional tendency to flaunt social convention with incredible grace. Her compassion and nuturing nature will be forever missed. Harriett's church family and her friends in the community dearly loved her. She leaves a testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and she will be greatly missed by all. A graveside service is at 2PM, Tuesday, April 1 at Olivewood Memorial Park, 3300 Central Avenue, Riverside, CA 92506, 951-683-6611.
