Harry L. Sheppard. Jr. Obituary
HARRY L. SHEPPARD JR. Born in Deposit, NY on October 31st, 1924 of H. Leon Sheppard Sr. and Marion Barrick Sheppard, Harry graduated from Northfield High School in Northfield, VT in 1942. He attended the University of Vermont until joining the US Navy in 1943 as an officer trainee at Brown University. Following two years of college and over a year of flight training, he was commissioned an Ensign, received his Naval Aviator wings, and reported for duty as a fighter pilot assigned to USS Tarawa in San Diego. Harry returned to civilian life in 1950 to study for and receive his Bachelor's degree in 1952 from Cornell University. Following several years in the hotel industry and drilling with the Naval Reserve, he was ordered back to active service as an Officer and Aviator. Captain Sheppard, US Navy, retired in 1974 after 30 years in assignments on various aircraft carriers, staffs, units, and naval stations, including Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Unit Alameda CA and Commanding Officer, Naval Administrative Center Treasure Island CA. His love of flying Navy aircraft was evident in his qualification in 14 different tactical/transport prop and jet aircraft. During his training phase in Corpus Christi, TX, in 1946, Harry met Yvonne Cardinal of Schenectady, NY, and they married soon after. They shared a rewarding and adventurous life together until her death in 2003, bringing up three children Bruce, Sandra, and Jo Anne (now deceased) and sharing Harry's working years in California, Virginia, Puerto Rico, and Florida and their retirement time together in California and Idaho and many places afar and in between. Harry was an avid golfer, but also enjoyed square dancing and traveling, and he was a fan of basketball, football, and professional golf. Harry and Yvonne met and enjoyed the company of many folks in their retirement years in Napa, Lake Berryessa, and Hemet CA and Hope ID. When Yvonne died he had the singular fortune to marry Kay, Yvonne's best friend, who had recently lost her husband, George Weeks of Hemet CA. Harry peacefully slipped away Tuesday, December 3rd in his home in Hemet at age 89. He is survived by his wonderful, loving wife of the past 9 years, Catherine Romo Sheppard; his children Bruce Sheppard and wife Carol of Grasonville, MD and Sandra Sheppard of Missoula, MT; four grandchildren, James Sheppard of Ridgefield CT, Thomas Sheppard of Annapolis MD, Whitney Wakimoto of San Diego CA, and Robyn Wakimoto of Kirkland WA, and five great grandchildren. He will be missed and most affectionately remembered for his forthrightness and kindness in his love and support of his family.
