Harvey William Powell Obituary
HARVEY WILLIAM POWELL Harvey William "Bill" Powell passed away September 26, 2013 in Air Force Village West, Riverside, CA, at 93. He is survived by Jean, his wife of 72 years; his sister Marge Cheeseman; his son Nicholas Powell & wife Barbara; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bill was born on December 13, 1919 in Douglas, WY, and came to southern California at an early age. Bill and Jean met in Excelsior High School, Norwalk, fell in love, and were married on April 6, 1941. As a B-17 pilot in World War II, Bill flew 31 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He continued his career in the US Air Force, earned his Command Pilot wings, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Philippines and his Master of Science in Education at the University of Southern California. While living in England, Japan, the Philippines, and Germany, Bill and Jean traveled extensively over a 60 year span, visiting almost 100 counties, reveling in the histories, diverse cultures, foods and wines. Bill was a unique and humorous man who enjoyed singing, playing the violin, and acting in numerous Little Theater groups. We will miss him greatly. There will be a brief memorial service at 1pm on Monday, Oct. 7th, at Riverside National Cemetery.
