She was born on June 11, 1924 in Cedar Lake, Texas and was the second youngest of seven children born to Nelse and Evelyn Hawkins, her parents. Dr. Russell was a strong advocate of children and promoted education throughout her life.
She received her early education in Texas, graduating from Prairie View A & M University in Hempstead, Texas, and taught in Lubbock following her graduation from college. In 1946 she married James Russell in Texas and moved to Riverside, California where their daughters, Beverly and Vicki were born and raised. She earned a Master's Degree from Redlands University and attained a Ph.D. in Human Behavior from United States International University in San Diego, California.
During her long and distinguished career in education, she was employed in Riverside Unified School District as a consultant for Pupil Personnel Services Department, Coordinator of the Emergency School Act, tenured professor at California State University, Fullerton, and adjunct professor at Riverside Community College, Riverside and Moreno Valley campuses. As her passion for education remained strong, upon retirement she most enjoyed time spent with her daughters, and traveling together with them throughout the world.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell, her parents and siblings, and is survived by her two daughters, Beverly and Vicki Russell of Riverside, CA.
