Howard William "Bill" Crowell Obituary
HOWARD "BILL" WILLIAM CROWELL THE GUNNER Bill passed away quietly in his sleep at age 90 on May 2, 2016, in Riverside, CA. He was born in Syracuse, New York, on April 22, 1926. He loved to tell people that if he had been born one day earlier he would have been the queen of England (Queen Elizabeth being born on April 21, 1926). He married his "Baby Doll," Alice, in 1947 and subsequently had 4 children: Sally, Susan, James, and Timothy. Bill joined the Marine Corps shortly after high school. He was eager to serve his country and did so for 30 proud years. He fought in World War II and Korea and was wounded in both conflicts, receiving 2 purple hearts. He also served two tours in Vietnam. During his career he and his family were stationed many places but his favorite was Hawaii. After retiring in 1974 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, he spent many happy times going back to Hawaii, visiting favorite haunts and watching many Pro Bowls. He was also proud of the fact that he visited almost all seven continents save for Antarctica. He accomplished his goal of going to college, and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting at Cal Poly Pomona. Bill was also an avid Angels and Syracuse basketball fan. Originally an Episcopalian, Bill joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he remained a faithful and active member until his death. Bill was predeceased in life by his wife of 44 years, Alice, and a daughter, Susan. He is survived by his sister Betty; his children Sally, Jim, and Tim; 3 nieces; a nephew; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, and all the many friends he made throughout his life. There will be a public viewing on May 17th, from 4 to 8 PM at Acheson and Graham Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside. Services will be held on May 18th, at 11:30 AM, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4375 Jackson St., Riverside, with interment following at 1:30 PM at the Riverside National Cemetery, with full military honors. Dad, you will be missed. Rest in peace and much love. Your daughter, Sally
