Hurley W. "Bill" Roberts Jr. Obituary
HURLEY "BILL" W. ROBERTS, JR., born August 4, 1931, bid farewell to his family on November 16, 2014 at his home in Redlands, with his family by his side. Born to Mary & Hurley W. Roberts Sr. in Paris, Arkansas, he is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Morio Goldsworthy (Lonoke, AR) and Magdeline Garrett (Rio Dell, CA) and his son Hurley W. Roberts III (Redlands, CA) as well as numerous friends and relatives. Bill came to California with his family at the age of 9 and they settled in Corona, where he graduated from Corona High School in 1949. He then enlisted in the Navy and became a salvage diver and was later stationed in Pearl Harbor. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Shores, in 1952. After many stops along the way, they settled back in Corona and had a son, Hurley (the 3rd), in 1955. In 1962, Bill and Beverly started ROCON steel in Paramount, where he worked until he retired in 1977. Their daughter, Marita, was born in 1963 in Long Beach, CA. Bill and Beverly built a home in Bloomington, CA in 1970 where they resided until 1986. Bill was the founder/owner of ROCON RACING team, a world championship motorcycle racing team. This adventure brought him much joy and adventure. He loved his racing team like they were his own children. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling, playing cards and most of all, sitting on his lake front porch at Ruth Lake, CA. He was active in several Lions Club chapters and was a past president of the Bloomington Chapter in 1974. He was a member at Redlands Country Club for many years and enjoyed his card playing group so much that no appointments were allowed on "card days". Bill was always willing to lend a helping hand and was a true friend to many. Bill will be dearly missed by his wife of nearly 63 years, Beverly Roberts (Redlands, CA), daughter Marita and son-in-law Mark Gardner (Redlands) along with two grandsons Riley Gardner (Jackson Hole, WY) and Austin Gardner (San Jose, CA). Bill lived a full life and he will be grieved by many, especially his daughter, who was the apple of his eye. Friends and family are invited to Bill's memorial service on Saturday, November 29 at 12 pm at the Gardner home at 1810 Country Club Drive in Redlands. Private interment to follow at a later date.
