IRMGARD M. SHELDON A resident of Corona, California for over thirty years, Irmgard died March 14, 2013 in Manassas, Virginia. She was ninety-six years old. Cause of death was congestive heart failure. Born in upstate New York, Irmgard was a graduate of the Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City. She entered the US Army Nurse Corps in 1941 and served in England and France. Married to George Sheldon, a meteorologist in the US Air Force she served as an operating room nurse at various hospitals before joining the Veterans Administration in the 1960s. When George was transferred to March AFB, Irmgard began working as an operating room superviser at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital. She supervised over twenty operating rooms and participated in the first heart transplant ever done at a VA hospital. The last few years of her career were spent at the Loma Linda Veterans Hospital. In 1999, after her husband's death, Irmgard went to live with her daughter, a retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander. Irmgard is survived by her daughter. Final interment will be in the family plot in upstate New York later this spring.
