JACK CHARLES DOWNEY 1/12/23 - 12-19-16 Jack passed away in Auburn, CA at age 93. Born in Lamoni, Iowa, the fourth child of Arthur and Laura Newberry, and adopted by Edward and Lottie Downey days later at the death of his mother. Jack grew up in Lamoni and attended the local Graceland College, participating in football, basketball and choir. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, an officer on the USS Stokes during the landing at Iwo Jima in 1945. He married his college sweetheart, Marjorie Kelley, in 1944, two daughters were born, and in 1949 they moved to CA where he attended UCLA. Three more children were born, and the family eventually settled in Hemet, CA, where he and Marge lived until 2006, when they relocated to Auburn. Jack lived a full life. He served in his church and was active in Rotary Club, motorhome travel clubs, Barbershop Quartet singing, and played tennis and golf into his later years. He and Marge loved Kauai and made annual trips for 25 years. He was a lover of cars. At 14 years old, he was the sole driver on a road trip with his parents from Iowa to California. He owned gas stations, sold new cars, collected vintage autos, and owned a used car business before retiring. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Marge, in 2011, two sisters and one brother. Survivors are daughters, Pam (Allen) Norton, Linda (Ron) Oates, Laura Downey, Janine (Mark) Yurdana, and son Craig Downey. Also surviving are three sisters and one brother, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves his second wife, Vivian of New Braunfels, TX. Interment will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA in January.
